A Spring Yarn Haul

Yarn Haul: Wooly Mastadon

It happened, I broke my six month span of not purchasing any yarn. I did receive some yarn as gifts, but none of it was something I purchased. Until this past week. Once again I found myself in Wausau, Wisconsin at the Black Purl, a lovely LYS that carries some amazing yarn. Of course I had to pick something up. Here’s what I got.

You can see a theme in my acquisitions of yarn this time, blues, turquoises, cool colors. I have no idea why since normally summer means extra brights but these colors are amazing. Of course I had to pick up a skein of Cascade 220 Heathers in color number 2448. Its a lovely shade of blue with a tiny bit of turquoise mixed in. It is screaming to become a wonderful squishy hat for this next winter.

When Madelinetosh is in sight, I have to buy it. Thus I picked up a skein of Tosh Merino Light in the Glass Bottom Boat colorway. I might be changing what colors I knit my Madelinetosh shawl in to use this with another skein I have. We shall see.

Finally I got a skein of Cascade Yarn Heritage Prints in color 33. Its not my color comfort zone with the browns but it is a lovely color combination and I can’t wait to knit socks out of it.

That’s it, three skeins of yarn. I behaved but I am so happy to have this yarn in my stash soon to be used. Anyway, it’s Friday…the 13th (my favorite type of Friday…so much fun I love it). Hope your weekend is full of yarn and fun.

Yarn Haul Goodness

Yarn Haul: Wooly Mastadon

This past week I had the opportunity to visit for the second time an amazing yarn shop, The Black Purl. It is a lovely shop located in Wausau, Wisconsin. I had stopped there once before earlier this year on a trip and was excited when I got to stop by again. This time, I came with a plan. I ended up purchasing three skeins of yarn and a pair of needles to try out. Here’s what I got.

Yarn Haul: Wooly Mastadon

For starters, I purchased another skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in the colorway Black Walnut (first image). Now, I have a plan for this. I already had the color Espadrilles and decided I wanted to make a shawl. The thing is, all the patterns I wanted to make (cue Kirsten Kapur’s Shawl Book One) used a bit more yardage or two colors. Thus my plan was set. I would save that skein until I could either order or get my hands on another skein of this yarn. Choosing a color was hard, but when I saw Black Walnut I was in love. I know it is a bit of a risky color combo but I am excited to see how the shawl will emerge. If I choose the right pattern, this could really shine.

The other two skeins of yarn I purchased are pretty boring but I have a plan. On my last visit I had purchased some Berroco Vintage in four colors. One of those colors was gray. I was thinking about it and if I added a bit more yardage, I would have enough for some time of color block or colorwork sweater. I decided to purchase two skeins of a gray (color 5107). Now all I have to do is find a pattern, which I sense will take a while. Alas, I have the yarn so that is done.

Finally I purchased a pair of circular needles. I have never tried Knitter’s Pride needles so I thought I’d pick up a pair. They are the Dreams US 3 (3.25mm) 24 inch needles. I hope they are nice but mostly I am just excited to try a new set of needles.

Well, that is all for now. I have yarn, I have needles. I am set for winter, bring on the holidays and the dark days: my afghan, tea, music, and knitting supplies are ready. I have more to share later this week (maybe even a fiber haul…gasp!) so stay tuned.

My Travel Yarn Haul!

Yarn Haul: Wooly Mastadon

Time does fly when you’re having fun…wait, did I just say that?! Well, blog week was a lot of fun last week but that meant I have been saving the yarn haul I mentioned a while back for when it was done. When I went down to Wausau, WI the other week, the first thing I did was make sure that I would get a chance to stop at the LYS, The Black Purl. It was completely worth the time and I must say I went kind of crazy and got a ton of stuff. First of all, I’d just like to say that this is one of the most welcoming yarn shops. At the front of the store when you walk in is a table with chairs just for people to sit and knit, which was exactly what the ladies in the store were doing. They were friendly and asked what I was working on, but were also content to just let me browse (some yarn shops have people who follow you around talking and I do like my space to think about new projects, but also like to have the option to chat it up if I want to). Can I say the store was amazing. Even the outside was cool. When we drove up (my Mom was with me) and the building looked awesome with it’s black paint with pops of neon. The store was really artsy (which I absolutely love) and had lots of shop samples and interesting fibers. To many of you, the things I got perhaps aren’t as exciting but every yarn in this haul is new to me yarn. I have never tried any of the brands but have wanted to. So, with that, here’s what I ended up getting.

The first thing I got (well, first four, but I’m lumping them together as one) was four skeins of Berroco Vintage in colors #51180 (coral color), #5182 (plum color), #5197 (teal color), and #5107 (grey color). I ended up getting these skeins in the hope of making a crazy project using all of the colors (I know I’m not smart, as I got four different colors, but I loved the way they looked together so it shall have to come to pass). I have heard of this yarn as good for sweaters so I am excited to try it out.

The second thing I got was a skein of Cascade 220 Heathers in color #2423. I loved the color, I don’t have anything like it in my stash, and have wanted to test out this yarn in a project. It’s not crazy soft but I would definitely wear it against my skin…a cowl perhaps?

Thirdly, I got a Zauberball. It is color #2082 and the crazy purple stripes were just calling my name. Because I have heard that the thick-thin places in this yarn don’t always work for socks, I knew that going in and hope to make this into a crazy shawlette or something like that. Regardless, I am really excited about this one.

The last skein of yarn I got (but not the last item from the shop) was a skein of Madelinetosh: Tosh Merino Light, in the Espadrilles colorway. I have seen the colorway before and loved it, so when they had it on display at the Black Purl, I knew it had to be mine. I have really wanted to try out this yarn, so when I spotted this I nearly squealed with joy. I am so excited for this one. Again, perhaps this may become a shawl, or perhaps I will obtain another skein and make a two color shawl…the possibilities.

Finally, in one of my blog week posts I mentioned that my Lavishea bar was almost gone and that I needed to get another one. Well, here it is, the exact same thing. I just love this scent so I decided not to veer off to another although they all smell good.

Well, that is all (and that was a lot) for this yarn haul. I was a regular wool pig but I don’t regret a single purchase. I am excited to try all of these yarns which are often considered stables in many knitters stashes. Also, if you even go through Wausau, WI, definitely stop by The Black Purl. It is a wonderful shop, and the next time I am down there I am stopping by. Love it!
